To comma, or not to comma . . .

I believe that I over-comma my writing.  I was going to seek your advice on comma'ing but then decided to Google it instead.  I found this great site: Grammar Book with a whole list of rules about commas (in fact too many rules to remember).  I tend to use rules 8 and 11 quite a bit.  Maybe too much.

I'm probably still no further ahead.  Next, apostrophe's, but for now: to comma or not to comma . . .

  1. So, what you're saying, if I get you correctly, is that I shouldn't use this many commas?

    1. Only the first comma is technically wrong. The rest separate clauses.

    2. Well Jim, I would have thought you are correct . . . but . . . apparently not! :-)

  2. One of my pet peeves is the constant over-use of commas in pieces of writing.... something which I'm never guilty of, I think. It just slows down the pace of reading enormously.

    1. As a teacher, I'm sure you go nuts over this! I was proud of myself a few years ago when I asked a high school English teacher I worked with to grade an article I wrote for a technical newsletter. I got an A- because of a couple of sentences where the tense disagreed. But no commas out of place!

  3. I am a grammar geek. I try very hard to write properly formed sentences. Commas are a pain. Apostrophes are easy. (Your use above is wrong. No apostrophe is plural, usually.) I want to start a "non-professional" proofreading service for M/M Romance writers, bloggers who are serious about their presentation, and others who want to come across as educated in the English language and its typical and usual usage. $50 a pop! What do you think? HAHAHAHA

    Peace <3

    1. I do have an English Minor with my Bachelor of Arts degree! Three hours short of a double major, but I sure wanted out of college! (That is proper use of a comma.) Oh, and Grammar Book is excellent, I refer to it a lot!
